Pools of Light

The “Pools of Light”Ring is named for the way the lab-created sapphire refracts and bends light as it moves through its facets. 

This ring is part of an ongoing exploration of light, texture, and our responsibility as makers. At its center is a lab-created sapphire (synthetic corundum), chosen intentionally. While visually and chemically identical to mined sapphires, lab-grown stones offer a significantly lower environmental impact. They eliminate the need for large-scale earth displacement, reduce water consumption, and avoid the habitat destruction and pollution often associated with traditional mining.

That said, sustainability is rarely absolute. Lab-created sapphires require significant energy to produce, and their carbon footprint ultimately depends on the energy source behind that process. For me, this work is an ongoing commitment - to stay informed, to be transparent, and to continuously improve how materials are sourced and used.

The surrounding texture reflects this philosophy. Its surface feels almost geological, like erosion, accumulation, or fragments slowly reshaping over time. It speaks to the idea that meaningful change isn’t immediate; it is built through small, intentional actions, repeated over time.
